Fall is a great time to take care of those computer problems you’ve been putting off. Maybe your laptop is running hotter than it used to, Windows seems slower, your storage is nearly full, or you’ve been wondering whether your older computer is worth repairing at all.
At Twin Cities PC Repair, I see these problems every day. And after 20 years in business, one thing I’ve learned is that computer problems rarely fix themselves. A small issue today can turn into an expensive repair—or lost data—tomorrow.

1. Is Your Computer Slower Than It Used to Be?
Computers naturally accumulate software, updates, temporary files, startup applications, and other clutter over time. But a noticeable slowdown shouldn’t automatically be dismissed as “the computer getting old.”
There may be a specific reason for it.
A slow computer could be suffering from a nearly full SSD, insufficient memory, excessive startup programs, Windows errors, malware, overheating, or even a storage drive beginning to fail.
One of the first things I look at when diagnosing a slow computer is why it’s slow rather than simply recommending replacement.
Sometimes a relatively inexpensive SSD or memory upgrade can dramatically improve performance and extend the useful life of a computer for several more years.
Other times, I’ll tell you that putting more money into the machine simply doesn’t make sense.
That’s one of the advantages of dealing with a local, independent computer repair shop. My goal isn’t to sell you the most expensive solution—it’s to find the right solution.
2. A Hot Computer Is Trying to Tell You Something
Does your laptop’s fan seem to run constantly?
Does the bottom of the computer get extremely hot?
Does performance suddenly drop while you’re gaming, editing photos, or doing other demanding work?
Those symptoms shouldn’t be ignored.
Dust gradually collects inside computers and can restrict airflow through cooling fans and heatsinks. Thermal compound between the processor and heatsink can also deteriorate with age.
When temperatures become excessive, modern processors can reduce their operating speed to protect themselves. This is called thermal throttling, and it can make an otherwise powerful computer feel surprisingly slow.
Gaming laptops are especially susceptible because powerful CPUs and graphics processors are packed into a very small space.
Cleaning the cooling system, checking operating temperatures, inspecting the fans, and replacing old thermal compound when appropriate can help restore performance and potentially extend the computer’s life.
3. Back Up Your Files Before You Need Data Recovery
Here’s something I wish every computer owner would remember:
If an important file exists in only one place, it isn’t really backed up.
Hard drives and SSDs can fail. Computers can be dropped. Windows can become corrupted. Ransomware can encrypt files. Laptops can be stolen. Sometimes a computer simply doesn’t turn on one morning.
Important photographs, tax documents, business files, family videos, and other irreplaceable information should have more than one copy.
Microsoft has a helpful Windows backup overview explaining several available backup options.
I generally recommend having important information stored in more than one location, such as your computer plus an external drive or reputable cloud service.
If your drive is already acting strangely, that’s different.
Freezing, corrupted files, disappearing folders, extremely slow file access, startup problems, or unusual noises from a mechanical hard drive can indicate a more serious problem.

4. Computer Scams Are Becoming More Convincing
One of the biggest technology threats I see isn’t a defective computer.
It’s social engineering.
Scammers don’t necessarily need sophisticated malware if they can convince someone to voluntarily give them access to a computer.
Fake Microsoft security warnings, subscription-renewal invoices, antivirus notices, bank alerts, delivery notifications, and browser pop-ups are designed to create urgency.
They want you to react before you have time to think.
Be especially suspicious when someone unexpectedly asks you to install remote-access software, provide banking information, purchase gift cards, transfer money, or give them access to your computer.

5. Should You Repair Your Computer or Replace It?
This is probably one of the most common questions I’m asked:
“Patrick, is this thing even worth fixing?”
Sometimes yes.
Sometimes no.
And that’s exactly why I think an honest diagnosis is important.
A five-year-old quality laptop that needs an SSD may have plenty of useful life remaining. An inexpensive eight-year-old laptop needing a motherboard, battery, and screen probably isn’t a smart investment.
I consider the computer’s processor, RAM, storage, physical condition, Windows compatibility, repair cost, and what you’re actually using it for.
If repairing it makes sense, I’ll tell you.
If replacing it makes more sense, I’ll tell you that too.

How to Free Up Google Storage Space Without Losing Important Files – 9/8/2026
If you’re trying to free up Google storage space, it’s important to do it carefully. Google accounts can fill up surprisingly fast, especially when years of photos, videos, Gmail attachments, and Google Drive files begin piling up. For computer users in Bloomington, Minnesota, and throughout the Twin Cities, I regularly see storage problems caused not by one huge file, but by thousands of smaller files accumulating over time.
Before you start deleting anything, however, there’s one extremely important step I recommend:
IMPORTANT: Turn Off Google Photos Sync Before Cleaning Up
If your goal is to remove photos from Google Photos while keeping copies on your phone or another device, turn off Google Photos backup/sync first and verify where your originals are stored before deleting anything.
This is important because Google Photos is designed to synchronize your photo library across devices. Deleting photos without understanding what is synced can result in removing photos from places you intended to keep them.
Before doing a major cleanup, I recommend making a separate backup of irreplaceable photos and videos. An external SSD or hard drive is inexpensive insurance for years of family photos.
Google also provides instructions for managing and stopping photo backups through its official Google Photos Help documentation. Existing photos already stored in Google Photos aren’t automatically removed simply because you stop future backups.
What’s Using All Your Google Storage?
Google storage is shared across several Google services. That means the storage problem you’re seeing may not necessarily be Google Drive.
Your space may be consumed by:
Google Photos photos and videos
Google Drive files
Gmail messages and attachments
Items sitting in trash
Large videos and other forgotten files
Google’s storage management tools allow you to review usage by service and clean up Google Photos, Drive, Gmail, and Trash.
Rather than deleting hundreds of small photographs, look for a handful of extremely large videos first. Old screen recordings, accidental videos, duplicates, blurry photos, and screenshots are often excellent cleanup candidates.
Google Photos’ storage management tools can help identify categories such as large videos, screenshots, and blurry photos.
But remember: backup first, verify the backup, and then delete.
Clean Out Gmail
People often overlook Gmail when they’re trying to free up Google storage space.
Years of email attachments can consume a surprising amount of storage. Look for old emails containing large PDFs, videos, ZIP files, photos, presentations, and other attachments.
Don’t forget about Sent Mail, either. That 25 MB attachment you emailed several years ago may still be sitting there consuming space.
After cleaning up messages, check Gmail’s Trash and Spam folders as well.
Clean Up Google Drive
Next, examine Google Drive.
Old computer backups, duplicate documents, videos, ISO files, ZIP archives, exported photo libraries, and forgotten project folders can occupy gigabytes of space.
Before permanently deleting something, ask yourself:
“Is this the only copy?”
If the answer is yes—or you’re not sure—download or copy it to another storage device first.

Don’t Confuse Cloud Storage With Computer Storage
Here’s another common source of confusion.
Google storage and the SSD inside your computer are two different things.
You might have 500 GB available on your PC while your Google account is completely full. Conversely, Google might have plenty of available storage while your computer’s SSD has only 3 GB remaining.
Both need occasional maintenance.
Windows Storage Tip: Use Storage Sense
Windows 10 and Windows 11 include a useful feature called Storage Sense.
Go to:
Settings → System → Storage
Storage Sense can automatically remove certain temporary files and old Recycle Bin contents. Microsoft also provides cleanup recommendations that can identify temporary files, large or unused files, cloud files, and unused applications.
Be cautious with the Downloads folder. Don’t automatically delete everything just because Windows says the files are old.
Mac Users Have Storage Tools Too
On a Mac, go to:
Apple Menu → System Settings → General → Storage
macOS provides recommendations for optimizing storage and can show how much space is being consumed by applications, documents, photos, mail, and other categories.
Whether you’re using Windows, macOS, Google Drive, or another cloud service, a little routine maintenance goes a long way.
Clean your Downloads folder. It’s one of the biggest dumping grounds on most computers.
Empty the Recycle Bin or Trash. Deleting a file doesn’t necessarily immediately reclaim the space.
Uninstall software you no longer use. Games in particular can consume enormous amounts of SSD space.
Move archives to an external drive. Old videos and photo collections don’t necessarily need to occupy your primary SSD.
Look for duplicates. Multiple copies of the same photos, videos, installers, and ZIP files can waste significant space.
Don’t use a single external drive as your only backup. External drives fail too. Important files should ideally exist in multiple locations.
Leave some breathing room on your system drive. A nearly full Windows drive can interfere with updates and contribute to performance problems. Microsoft specifically notes that insufficient disk space can cause slower performance and problems installing Windows updates.

RAM Prices Have Become Expensive
One of the biggest computer hardware stories of 2026 has been the increasing cost of memory.
RAM prices have risen dramatically.
That’s particularly noticeable with newer DDR5 memory used in modern desktops and laptops.
Several factors can affect memory pricing, including worldwide demand, manufacturing capacity, data-center expansion, and manufacturers prioritizing higher-margin products.
Unfortunately, those increases eventually reach home computer users.
RAM is used in virtually every desktop and laptop computer, so higher memory prices can increase both upgrade costs and the price of complete new PCs.
Does that mean you should immediately upgrade your computer’s memory?
Not necessarily.
For many home computer users, 16GB of RAM is still adequate for web browsing, email, Microsoft Office, streaming, and other everyday tasks. Users working with large photographs, video editing, gaming, virtual machines, or other demanding applications may benefit significantly from 32GB or more.
Before spending money on additional memory, I recommend determining whether RAM is actually causing the performance problem.
SSD Upgrades and Computer Performance
Solid-state drives remain one of the most important improvements in modern computing.
If you’re still using a traditional mechanical hard drive as your primary Windows drive, upgrading to an SSD can dramatically improve boot times, program loading, Windows responsiveness, and overall computer performance.
Storage prices have also experienced pressure from increasing demand, making it even more important to choose the right drive instead of simply buying the most expensive model.
The important thing for home users to understand is that you don’t necessarily need the newest and fastest SSD available.
PCIe 5.0 NVMe drives can produce impressive benchmark numbers, but most home computer users won’t notice a dramatic difference between a high-quality PCIe 4.0 SSD and a much more expensive PCIe 5.0 model during everyday use.
A quality SSD with sufficient capacity and good reliability is often more important than purchasing the drive with the highest advertised speed.
AMD and Intel continue competing aggressively in the desktop and laptop processor markets.
That’s good news for consumers.
AMD Ryzen processors have become extremely competitive, while Intel continues developing its Core and Core Ultra product lines.
But I don’t recommend buying a computer simply because it has an Intel or AMD sticker on the case.
The specific processor model and generation matter much more.
A lower-end processor from a newer generation isn’t automatically better than a higher-end processor from the previous generation. The amount of memory, type of storage, graphics hardware, cooling system, and overall computer design also play major roles in performance.
When I’m helping someone select a computer, I start with a much simpler question:
What are you actually going to use the computer for?
Someone browsing the web, checking email, and working in Microsoft Office has completely different hardware requirements than someone editing thousands of high-resolution photographs or playing modern PC games.
Windows ARM Computers Are Becoming More Practical
Another area I’m watching closely is Windows on ARM.
Traditional Windows computers have primarily used x86 processors from Intel and AMD. ARM-based processors use a different architecture designed with efficiency and battery life in mind.
For years, application compatibility made ARM Windows computers difficult for me to recommend universally.
That’s changing.
According to Microsoft’s Windows ARM PC information, most Windows applications can now run on Windows 11 ARM-based PCs. Applications specifically designed for ARM generally provide the best performance, while Microsoft’s Prism emulator allows many traditional Windows applications to operate even when they weren’t originally developed for ARM.
That makes ARM laptops increasingly attractive for people who value long battery life, portability, quiet operation, and efficiency.
However, compatibility should still be checked carefully.
Specialized applications, older printers, scanners, utilities, hardware accessories, and certain drivers may not work exactly as expected.
For many home users, ARM is becoming a legitimate choice. For users with specialized software or hardware requirements, traditional AMD and Intel PCs can still be the safer option.
Should You Upgrade or Replace Your Home Computer?
This is one of the most common questions I hear when providing home computer repair in Bloomington, MN.
A computer that’s three, four, or even five years old isn’t automatically obsolete.
