Windows 11 continues to evolve, computer memory and storage prices have increased, AMD and Intel continue battling for processor supremacy, and ARM-based Windows computers are becoming a more realistic option for everyday users.
Here are some of the latest home computer tech news stories for 2026 that I think Bloomington and Twin Cities computer users should know about.
Windows 11 and Home Computer Repair in Bloomington, MN
One of the most important developments for Windows users involves Windows 11 version 24H2.
Computers that remain on unsupported versions of Windows eventually stop receiving the normal security and quality updates that help protect them from newly discovered vulnerabilities.
The good news is that this doesn’t necessarily mean you need a new computer.
Many Windows 11 computers can simply be upgraded to a newer supported release. If you’re unsure which version you’re running, there’s an easy way to check.
Press Windows Key + R, type winver, and press Enter.
Windows will display your current Windows 11 version and build number.

If your computer suddenly develops a problem, don’t immediately assume the hardware is failing.
If a computer begins crashing, freezing, displaying a black screen, running slowly, or behaving differently immediately after an update, the problem may involve Windows, a device driver, security software, or another application.
Proper diagnosis can save a lot of unnecessary expense.

RAM Prices Have Become Expensive
One of the biggest computer hardware stories of 2026 has been the increasing cost of memory.
RAM prices have risen dramatically.
That’s particularly noticeable with newer DDR5 memory used in modern desktops and laptops.
Several factors can affect memory pricing, including worldwide demand, manufacturing capacity, data-center expansion, and manufacturers prioritizing higher-margin products.
Unfortunately, those increases eventually reach home computer users.
RAM is used in virtually every desktop and laptop computer, so higher memory prices can increase both upgrade costs and the price of complete new PCs.
Does that mean you should immediately upgrade your computer’s memory?
Not necessarily.
For many home computer users, 16GB of RAM is still adequate for web browsing, email, Microsoft Office, streaming, and other everyday tasks. Users working with large photographs, video editing, gaming, virtual machines, or other demanding applications may benefit significantly from 32GB or more.
Before spending money on additional memory, I recommend determining whether RAM is actually causing the performance problem.
SSD Upgrades and Computer Performance
Solid-state drives remain one of the most important improvements in modern computing.
If you’re still using a traditional mechanical hard drive as your primary Windows drive, upgrading to an SSD can dramatically improve boot times, program loading, Windows responsiveness, and overall computer performance.
Storage prices have also experienced pressure from increasing demand, making it even more important to choose the right drive instead of simply buying the most expensive model.
The important thing for home users to understand is that you don’t necessarily need the newest and fastest SSD available.
PCIe 5.0 NVMe drives can produce impressive benchmark numbers, but most home computer users won’t notice a dramatic difference between a high-quality PCIe 4.0 SSD and a much more expensive PCIe 5.0 model during everyday use.
A quality SSD with sufficient capacity and good reliability is often more important than purchasing the drive with the highest advertised speed.
AMD and Intel continue competing aggressively in the desktop and laptop processor markets.
That’s good news for consumers.
AMD Ryzen processors have become extremely competitive, while Intel continues developing its Core and Core Ultra product lines.
But I don’t recommend buying a computer simply because it has an Intel or AMD sticker on the case.
The specific processor model and generation matter much more.
A lower-end processor from a newer generation isn’t automatically better than a higher-end processor from the previous generation. The amount of memory, type of storage, graphics hardware, cooling system, and overall computer design also play major roles in performance.
When I’m helping someone select a computer, I start with a much simpler question:
What are you actually going to use the computer for?
Someone browsing the web, checking email, and working in Microsoft Office has completely different hardware requirements than someone editing thousands of high-resolution photographs or playing modern PC games.
Windows ARM Computers Are Becoming More Practical
Another area I’m watching closely is Windows on ARM.
Traditional Windows computers have primarily used x86 processors from Intel and AMD. ARM-based processors use a different architecture designed with efficiency and battery life in mind.
For years, application compatibility made ARM Windows computers difficult for me to recommend universally.
That’s changing.
According to Microsoft’s Windows ARM PC information, most Windows applications can now run on Windows 11 ARM-based PCs. Applications specifically designed for ARM generally provide the best performance, while Microsoft’s Prism emulator allows many traditional Windows applications to operate even when they weren’t originally developed for ARM.
That makes ARM laptops increasingly attractive for people who value long battery life, portability, quiet operation, and efficiency.
However, compatibility should still be checked carefully.
Specialized applications, older printers, scanners, utilities, hardware accessories, and certain drivers may not work exactly as expected.
For many home users, ARM is becoming a legitimate choice. For users with specialized software or hardware requirements, traditional AMD and Intel PCs can still be the safer option.
Should You Upgrade or Replace Your Home Computer?
This is one of the most common questions I hear when providing home computer repair in Bloomington, MN.
A computer that’s three, four, or even five years old isn’t automatically obsolete.
In fact, many computers can remain useful considerably longer with proper maintenance and the right upgrades.

Buying a New Computer? Don’t Buy Based on Marketing
Shopping for a new PC has become increasingly confusing.
Advertisements are filled with terminology such as AI PC, NPU, DDR5, PCIe 5.0, Wi-Fi 7, Core Ultra, Ryzen, RTX, OLED, NVMe, and dozens of other specifications.
Some of these technologies provide genuine benefits.
Others may provide almost no noticeable advantage depending on how you use your computer.
For example, someone using a computer primarily for email, Facebook, web browsing, Zoom, banking, and Microsoft Office doesn’t need the same hardware as a photographer working in Adobe Lightroom or a gamer trying to play the latest games at high resolutions.
Don’t pay hundreds of dollars for performance you’ll never use.
At the same time, don’t buy an underpowered computer simply because the price looks attractive.
A properly configured computer can provide years of reliable service.
